March 5, 2022 is the 50th running of Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. To mark this special event, official Iditarod artist Jon Van Zyle once again decided to collaborate with official Iditarod photographer Jeff Schultz on the 2022 official print. In keeping with the theme of their previous “Double Vision” prints and books, the two merged their respective art to create this new, unique medium.
 
To make this year’s print, Jeff and Jon reviewed a number of winter landscape photos from Jeff’s photo collection. Together they chose a beautiful Alaska mountainscape and meadow with an early morning sunrise lighting up the peaks. From there the two talked through various ideas to decide just what Jon would add to the image to make it special for this 50th running of the Iditarod. They came up with this idea of a remote checkpoint where in the early morning light of day, dog mushers leave the comfort of a checkpoint on this 50th year of Iditarod .. 50 years of trail, friends, and memories of times and dogs past, into the light of a new day …
